How Learning Comes Alive at KADL

Over the past three months, KADL Magic Labs has introduced an exciting new initiative called the Reading Championship. This program was designed to address two key challenges: irregular attendance and high dropout rates among students. By making learning more engaging, relatable, and fun, the goal was to encourage children to look forward to coming to class each day.

Children are natural explorers, constantly questioning the world around them with curiosity and wonder. They ask “why,” “how,” and “when” with an eagerness to understand, and it is this innate drive that lies at the heart of KATHA’s learning philosophy.

In line with this spirit, the Reading the World program invites young learners to go beyond textbooks and discover how classroom concepts connect to the real world. Rooted in KATHA’s Story Pedagogy, this approach puts stories and lived experiences at the center of education, helping students make meaning through inquiry and imagination.

For example, in a lesson on distance, students used tools like Google Maps to measure how far their homes were from the nearest shop or vehicle stand. They explored different modes of transport and calculated distances in meters and kilometers. Taking it a step further, they drew their maps, plotted routes from their schools to nearby hospitals, and discussed which paths were the most practical.

This hands-on, student-centered approach is a cornerstone of KATHA’s methodology. It brings lessons to life by connecting them with real-world contexts, allowing children to understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters.

The children served by this program often live in multilingual environments. While they speak Telugu at home, they frequently use Tamil at school and in the community, especially since they live near the border between the two states. This linguistic complexity can sometimes create barriers to traditional learning methods.

That’s why KADL takes a different approach. Rather than starting with letters and slowly building up to sentences, KADL uses its unique LSSRW Pedagogy—Listening, Speaking, Storytelling, Reading, and Writing. This method prioritizes understanding and storytelling first, helping children connect emotionally and intellectually with the content. They start with the meaning behind words, which makes the learning process more intuitive and enjoyable.

With every new word or letter, students now associate a story, helping them retain knowledge more effectively and sparking a lifelong love for learning. This approach keeps them interested and invested in their education.

At its core, the Reading Championship is about more than just literacy. It fosters a culture of lifelong learning, encourages curiosity, and makes education meaningful for every KADL student.
