Join the Movement: Enhance the Joy of Reading and Make Every Child a Reader-Leader.

Introduction to KATHA

Translating Stories, Transforming Lives: The KATHA Journey

KATHA (since 1988) is a nonprofit education enhancing the joy of reading for underserved communities in India. And potential literacy is not just a skill but a gateway to opportunities, empowerment, and a brighter future.

Our Vision is to make every child read well for fun and meaning; every child is a Reader-Leader. We want to create a world where no child will live in S-P-I-C-E Poverty (Social, Personal Leadership, Intellectual, cultural, and Environmental). We are committed to making our Children proactive and responsible citizens who build a Free, Fair, and Fearless world.

Katha’s StoryPedagogy® has been a trusted learning model for over 35 years, positively impacting the lives of over 10 million children aged 3 to 16. With Katha’s Story Pedagogy, you can expect remarkable results such as a performance improvement of over 80%, a staggering 93% increase in attendance, and an impressive 97% growth in retention. The curriculum has built-in lesson plans aligned with NEP and NIPUN, and it has a super-easy teaching approach for educators. Moreover, it focuses on building 21st-century skills while celebrating the diversity and richness of India and its culture.

Some of our Programs span across the spectrum:

⎯ Katha Lab School – children in grassroots, dropouts, women, youth
⎯300 Million Citizens’ Challenge (300M)- NGOs, Budget schools, Shelter Homes, Orphanages, Community Radio Stations, youth-led groups and women empowerment groups
⎯ Slum Resurgence Initiative (SRI) – focus on women
⎯ Katha English Academy (KENGA) – children
⎯ Katha School of Entrepreneurship (KSE) – children and youth
⎯ Katha Adivasi and Dalit Labs – Indigenous children, community, youth
⎯ Katha’s StoryPedagogy™ – children

Leveraging technology and partnerships, we have partnerships across 22 states and over 250 organisations. We have reached 5,000 teachers and impacted the lives of 250,000 children. It’s alarming that 47% of India’s population cannot read at their grade level, highlighting the urgency to reform the education delivery system. Our efforts include creating 475 books in 10 regional languages over three years, drawing on 30 years of research. Additionally, we have developed a state-of-the-art and robust Learning Management System (LMS) platform. This LMS facilitates the delivery of books, activities, and methodologies to our partners working in the most remote areas of the country, where they can have a meaningful impact on children’s education.

KATHA’s pioneering efforts bridge gaps in the literacy-literature-leadership lifecycle, integrating innovative pedagogical tools, targeted resources, and dedicated educator training. Our mission is to ignite a passion for reading and learning, fostering a culture of knowledge, creativity, and innovation that transcends boundaries.

At the heart of this initiative lies a belief: every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and dream. Through our collaborative and holistic approach, we are teaching children to read and helping them write their stories of success and aspiration.

Defining Our Heroes: Interns and Volunteers

Interns: The Pioneers of Tomorrow

Intern: An intern typically engages in a role to gain practical work experience and skills in a specific field, often as part of their educational curriculum or for career development. The focus is on learning and professional growth within a structured program.

Interns at KATHA are more than just participants; they are catalysts of change. As an intern, you embark on professional growth and personal fulfilment. You will contribute your skills, learn from real-world challenges, and become part of a solution that shapes the future of education in India. Our internships offer a unique blend of hands-on experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to make a tangible impact in the lives of millions.

Volunteers: The Heartbeat of Our Mission

Volunteer: A volunteer offers their time and skills without expectation of financial compensation, driven primarily by a desire to contribute to a cause, support community initiatives, or provide charitable service, often with a more flexible commitment than an intern.

Volunteers are the vital force driving KATHA’s mission forward. Your volunteering journey is not just about the time and skills you contribute but about the lives you touch and the difference you make. As a volunteer, you join a community of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a lasting impact. Whether through teaching, content creation, or strategic support, your involvement brings us closer to our goal of a literate, empowered India.

Why Join Us? A Journey of Fulfillment and Impact

Joining KATHA as an intern or volunteer is more than a commitment; it’s an adventure in making a difference. Every task you undertake and every idea you bring to the table contributes to a more significant cause — the gift of literacy and the promise of a better tomorrow. Your journey with us is continuous learning, where challenges are opportunities for innovation, and your efforts are celebrated milestones in our collective story.

You’re not just joining an initiative; you’re becoming part of a movement that believes in the power of education to transform lives. At KATHA, every contribution is valuable, every effort is appreciated, and every individual is an agent of change. Let’s turn the page to a brighter, more literate India together.
