translating stories transforming lives

katha translation for equity network

There are two distinct Indias: the one that is comfortable in English, and one that isn’t. And when two young people, equally smart and intelligent, enter college, the one with this comfort understands better, does better, and in the job market, gets a better pay packet than the other.

According to available statistics, there are some 105 million young people in India in the age group of 15-25. Census projections show this will remain so for the next 20-odd years. Each year, millions of students will be ready, theoretically, for their undergraduate degrees.

High schools and colleges now attract immigrants from rural India from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds. Caste, class and, not the least, language, all stand as obstructions to individual dreams. Working with students from underserved communities since 1990, Katha realized two urgent needs: knowledge that prepares these students for a college education and/or career pathways; and upward mobility and sustainable skills in English.

The Katha Translation for Equity Network (KTEN) addresses the problem of equity in access to knowledge and education for our country’s underprivileged children studying in secondary and post-secondary educational institutions, and seeks to empower them with the tools and skills necessary for them to realize their true potential. It pledges to help them take full advantage of the increased job opportunities of a knowledge-based globalizing economy, so as to eventually create a level playing field for all by:

  • Helping students from bhasha schools do well in college and expand their knowledge base by providing quality translations of seminal syllabus texts across disciplines in their own languages.
  • Enabling college students to teach themselves English and improve their reading, writing and comprehension by creating self-access study materials for bhasha stories in English translation.
  • And to achieve these ends, catalyzing mass collaboration, through the Internet, among teachers, students and resource persons across India.
