language activism

KATHAVILASAM,
the story research and resource centre, seeks to bring
to the fore quality fiction from the bhashas and take
it to a wider readership through translations. Katha’s
publishing programme straddles the worlds of more than 300 wordsmiths across 21
Indian languages – Asomiya, Bangla,
Bhojpuri, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani,
Maithili, Malayalam, Marathi, Meiteilon, Mizo, Oriya, Punjabi,
Rajasthani, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu – bringing
the best from these languages to children and adults across
the world. We see translation as one kind of activism to
change and unite the world. Translation and culture, for
us, are not limited to one aspect of life, but are catalysts
for social inclusion and development, through our various
stories and story-related events. And we are always looking
for fellow activists to join us in our endeavour. Through
our books, utsavs, workshops, film centre activities and
the K-TEN, we aim to involve as many people as possible
in this area of work. Writers, translators, academics – we
welcome you all into the Katha community!
