Donor-Partners

Katha started off in 1988 with a corporate partner, ITDC. Since then, we have had good friends in corporate, donor organizations, governments —  Indian and foreign — who have helped make our work sustainable and meaningful. Thank you!

Adobe | Scaling up our IT expertise
Adobe came to us through CAF India and has helped us turn a cowshed into an IT centre for children from the large slum and resettlement colony of Faridabad, Haryana.  Their funding for KathaTECH is and has been indispensable to the economic resurgence of nearly 20 slums these centres cater to.

AusAid | Support across the literacy to literature continuum
The Australian High Commission started off supporting our literary ventures like the very creative and demanding Les Murray translation project. But have been taking more of an interest in our educational initiatives too. The Australian High Commission supported the Books on Wheels program in 2006.

Axis Bank Foundation| Teaching us as bankers
They gave us the courage and resources to start preschools and utilise our experience of many years. And now, two years later we are continuing to benefit from what we learnt from our ECD experience.

Bank of America | Payroll Giving for our street children’s programme
It  partners with Katha through United Ways. While their initial involvement was on a small scale, interest was piqued when their volunteers visited our schools. They then supported our street children’s programme.

 Barrington Educational Initiative
Barrington has supported our effective teacher education and faculty clubs since 2007.  They also aided our very ambitious whole school transformation programme which involved 50 municipal corporation schools in Delhi through the training of about 500 teachers.

BT, UK Changing the I of IT from “Individual” to “Inclusive”
In 2001, BT Global was looking for a partner in South Asia and fortunately at the same time Katha was in need of a strong partner for our Katha InfoTech and eCom School. The instant understanding between these organisations made the basis for a strong alliance that has endured for 10 years, now. Their projects have taken our children to the UK and helped our teachers interact with educators in London and other cities. Last year, when we finally decided that Katha UK must be made a reality, the idea was carried forth by BT with a reception at the BT Towers, London.

Bernard van Leer Foundation
From 2007 they have been enthusiastic partners in our work in early education. Their grant also helps bring together all our work for children below the age of 8 on one platform: KHEL, the Katha Holistic Early Learning Centre. They also support research and books that investigate the underlying problems that beset early learning in children and how these issues can be alleviated.
In 2009-10 they supported the expanding of our school transformation programme for grades 1-3 in Delhi’s municipal schools.

 CAF India
With CAF India’s help we started KathaTech centres in two huge slum clusters; Tuglakabad and Khore Gaon and ever since the communities have greatly appreciated our work with the centres attracting more and more students each day.

Delhi Government | Starting us off right. And staying with us through the years!
In 1989, the Commissioner of the Delhi Government’s Slum Wing saw Tamasha! our magazine for first generation learners, and bought some copies to distribute to slum children. This led to Katha being invited into the largest slum cluster of the early 90’s, the Govindpuri slums. The partnership has continued eversince  to benefit thousands of children through quality education, and their families with a strong economic revival programme.

Ford Foundation | All about storytelling and translation
One of our most notable partners, they supported us for 10 years and then gave us a challenge grant of USD 500,000. Due to the good standing we have with our partners and communities, Katha managed to match this at an average of 1: 10!

Intel | Bringing computers into community revitalization
In 2001 Katha was invited to be the first partner in Intel’s clubhouse initiative for South Asia. The three years we worked together were full of fun activities coming together with computers with the goal of encouraging community resurgence – a huge boost to Katha’s innovative schools!

IOC
IOC provided crucial support to the Katha Lab School, supporting its innovative work that introduced poverty reduction into the very curriculum of the school and community resurgence activities into the classroom.

Government of India, MHRD | Carrying Reading into 50 slums
The Department of School Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, began supporting E4, the Epicentre for Excellence in Elementary Education in 2004. The project is an integrated five-pronged effort to increase student attendance, retention and performance. They support the English Academy, the reading campaign and libraries in 50 slums in Delhi and Haryana. They also undertake research that will lead to an overview of the quality of children’s education throughout Delhi.

Michael and Susan Dell Foundation
MSDF joined Katha and has since provided generous support to our school. With their help, we learnt to combine our own active story based learning approach with thorough assessment of student comprehension and learning. We have honed the Katha Way and increased its reach to include large numbers of children and teachers through our work with MSDF.

 MCD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi
It has supported Katha both through their kind contribution in bringing MCD teachers into Katha’s School Transformation Project, STeP and their involvement in the I Love Reading Campaign which helps students attain grade-level reading.

NTPC Ltd.
In 2010, this Maharatna Company helped Katha to make our Katha Lab School more sturdy and attractive for our children. Their grant also helps us bring in essential school equipment.

PVR
Concerned about street children around their cinema theatre, they support our work with street children in one of our Tamasha Roadshow stops. We work with drug addicted children and see their opportunites open up because of their support.

Tech Mahindra Foundation TMF | Instilling hope
With their steady support and cooperation, the Katha Lab School has emerged as the centre of creative education, reaching out to lakhs of children in the slums, streets, government and municipal schools of Delhi and Haryana and tribal areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The Katha Lab School has proved to be a powerful tool for enabling children and youths to reach their highest potential, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive!

 UNESCO
Our partnership with UNESCO began in translations; building bridges between India and Pakistan through stories. They were involved in our reading programme in the MCD Schools and continue extending their warm friendship and essential support that keeps us going in spite of limited funds for this very important work.

UNICEF
The first major partner since Katha was just a gleam in our founder’s eye! They supported Tamasha! for many years, seeing it grow from a print-run of 5000 to 100,000 copies per issue. They support us in our reading campaign in MCD Schools.

UNITED WAYS
Their support has grown with their understanding of the way in which Katha works. Through asking questions and delving deeper, they have strengthened their trust in the organisation . Their contribution this year has been their biggest, to date.

 Wipro applying thought to Schools
One of the few unrestricted funds we have received over the last three years, it has allowed us to do so many things; from running our tribal schools in Arunachal Pradesh, to developing books for children to sharpening up our curriculum and pedagogy  for introduction in government schools.

 INDIVIDUAL DONORS, 2010

Krishna Ayyar Family: Translating Stories . Transforming Lives

Whenever we have needed urgent funds, KAF has been there for us. This year, they’re supporting our primary schools in slums where other schools are not easily accessible to children.

Nitya Ramanathan & Malkeet Gupta

Two young people who have always supported Katha. This year, their funds support a whole school in Sonia Gandhi Camp, Prahaladpur.

Tulsi & Indranil Dutta & Friends

Two more young people living in the US who support us in many ways; from maintaining our website to helping us write letters and editing grant proposals to now, supporting the preschool we run in Master Colony, Tuglakabad.

All the children and adults of Katha say a BIG thank you to all our donor partners and each one of our supporters from the bottom of our hearts! None of our work would have been possible without your inestimable and generous support. We thank those many who gave without wanting to be named for their time, money, advice and guidance. And in case we have left anyone else out, we ask for your forgiveness and indulgence.

YOU can make a huge difference! Join the family. Help our children succeed!
