translating stories transforming lives

“Katha has been doing a better job than the Delhi government”, said the Chief Minister

Around 500 women reached the India Habitat Centre from the 60 slum clusters around Delhi to celebrate “Aurat:Dilli ki Shaan”, a women’s day initiative by Katha. These women are associated with Katha as members of self-help groups, societies etc.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reached the India Habitat Center and was escorted by Geeta Dharmarajan, Executive Director and Founder of Katha, Parvinder Kaur, Director of Katha, and women leaders from the community. The function was chaired by Smt Sheila Dikshit, Geeta Dharmarajan and Mr K Dharmarajan.

The crowd was elated and overwhelmed to see the Chief Minister come to address their problems. Fifteen women community leaders from different slum areas of Delhi were felicitated by the Chief Minister and given trophies, certificates and sarees on behalf of the organization. These women community leaders are supported by Katha to encourage and train other women from the slum clusters.

Smt. Shiela Dixit then addressed the women and expressed her concern over the issues of lack of sanitation facilities and electricity and water shortages in the slum clusters. She said that “Katha has been helping these women in empowering themselves". She also congratulated Katha saying that it has been doing a better job than the Delhi Government to bring under-privileged women to the forefront.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY AT KATHA

1990. A few months after starting our school for children living in one of the largest slum clusters in Delhi, we realized that economic empowerment of women is the first step towards ensuring the futures of our children. Since then, our schools have been the launch pad for our staunch belief: “when women earn children learn.”

Today we can proudly say that the children and women of the Katha Schools continue to bring positive change into their lives with the help of Katha: that’s more than 2,53,500 children and 91,500 women to date! There cannot be a better reason to celebrate International Women’s Day 2009! And to move with our women into the next decade of struggle for equity and equality of opportunities and futures for all.

THE PROGRAMME

‘Dilli ki Shaan’ – PRIDE OF DELHI

8th March . Inaugural: Special Invitee: Dr. Kiran Walia, Honorable Minister for Women and Children, Delhi Government.
Beginning 8th March’09 we initiate a series of events to celebrate spirited women. The event starts at the Katha Public School in the Govindpuri Slum Cluster. It then grows to include all communities of Delhi where Katha works.

25th March . GRANDE FINALE: Special invitee: Honorable Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi.
The programme culminates at Delhi’s cultural hub: The India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

HIGHLIGHTS:

2500 women from communities across Delhi (more than 60 slum communities and 71 schools where Katha works), are expected to participate. They would be essentially the members of Katha’s community interventions: The Community Welfare Societies, Mahila Panchayats, our Working Women’s Forum, the Katha Adult Literacy Programme and the Ma Mandal programme.

We invite all our partners, friends and volunteers to celebrate women’s day with us. This celebration has a wider meaning for all of us as we review how far we have come in our collective struggle for equality, peace and development. We welcome you to unite with us, to mobilize for meaningful change.
