IMPACT
Many of our children are in college today. Others are working
in mainstream organizations like Infosys, IBM, Citibank.
The Katha All in School Mission [KASM] ensures that all
our children complete school up to grade 12. Our Friends
have helped us make significant strides with donation
of time, expertise, experience and money. We foster culturelinking
through storytelling that benchmark alternative education,
and empowerment of women and children living on the margins
of society. Unearthing stories from oral and written traditions
across India and the subcontinent, preserving and passing
them on as potent instruments of social change, we have
looked at translation as a non-divisive tool for the country
as a whole and have worked towards breaking age-old gender,
cultural and social stereotypes.
KATHA’S MILLENNIUM GOALS
To give
India’s young people a chance to bring themselves
out of severe poverty and hungre, we pledge to meet the
following goals we have set ourselves for 2010:
GOAL 1 QUALITY EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
LEARNING
for children below the age of 5. All studies have shown
that when children get early childhood education, they
stay till school graduation! But most Delhi slums do not
have quality ECD centres for toddlers and babies –
places of fun and frolic, where they can learn pre-school
skills. Katha has 50 centres. And we want the pregnant
women and lactating mothers to look after their little
ones. Come start with us – to give our kids a great
START!
The aim: To
give childhood back to a toddler in a slum with just Rs
200/ USD 5/month/child.

lacking decent civic amenities: proper toilets or water

GOAL 7 BASIC AMENITIES FOR THE URBAN POOR
Urban India wants the poor to build our bridges and malls;
but we do not want ot see them or know them. This means
precarious lives for nearly 50% of Delhites, in degraded
physical environments, without even the basic amenities.
The
aim: To give women and children minimum basic amenities
so they can live decent lives. Rs 4,00,000 or USD 10,000/community.

to translators and academic, from performing artists to
visual and plastic artists. If you tell a story, in any
form, you belong with us! Come power the Katha internet

KATHA IS 20!
In 2008
Katha turns 20 and the year 2008 – 2009 is of special
significance for us. The tumultuous events and issues
played out across the world have made us realize the growing
importance of our work where the wave of hatred spreading
increasingly along the lines of race, religion and language.
The strains of poverty, overpopulation and social strife
demand their toll. Though India is among the 10 fastest
growing economies in the world, we are still to put level
playing fields in place.
We strongly
believe that, for India, where habits have taken a long
time to make, the story is one of the most valuable means
of change. Each one of us in Katha sees herself/himself
as a change agent.
